When Syfy announced they would be making brand new sci-fi series I was overjoyed. Soon it became clear it would be set on Earth itself, a few decades into the future. Although this was a disappointment to me, like everyone else, I hoped for a space oriented series, I was glad we at least would get some real sci-fi.
This is partly true, there are aliens, it is sci-fi but mostly it's drama. Very early on in the series Defiance was renewed for a second season because of good ratings. Although they (ratings) dwindled down a bit, Syfy still had a ratings hit on it's hands. I personally am enjoying the first season of Defiance. It has some interesting characters, of course my favourite is the mysterious Irisa Nyira played by Stephanie Leonidas. Other interesting characters are Stahma Tarr (Jaime Murray), Doc Yewll (Trenna Keating) and I always like Julie Benz as Amanda Rosewater. The stories are not always as great but still enjoyable, it has an over arcing story which is really important to me to keep interested. Unfortunately we will have to wait 8 to 9 more months before Defiance returns with seasons two. It won't be back before June 2014.
Regarding the Blu-Ray, it was very surprising that Defiance was released in the UK right after the broadcast in July, not only the UK but also in France and Germany, while in North America Defiance will be released in October 2013. There are a few differences between the European and the North American releases for instance the number of discs each set holds. The European release is 4 discs while the North American release consists of 3 discs. I wonder why this is the case. Both releases do have Ultraviolet included.
Another big difference between the region B & A releases are the extra's. On the European set there is not one featurette, not one commentary only five deleted scenes (11 min) and a gag reel (3 min). That is the price the Europeans pay to have the release earlier than the North Americans because it looks like there will be more extra's on region A set. (see below) This is really disappointing. The European release has an English, French and German soundtrack, and also has English (HoH), French and German subtitles. There is also Spanish mentioned but apparently only for the first two discs! The UK release is region code free.
These blu-rays look outstanding, they were shot digitally at 5K and post-produced at 2K, just like an expensive movie. The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is also excellent, the pilot can shake the foundations of your house/building if played loud., who wants to go back to those DVD's!
As I said, till now I am enjoying myself with this series, still I do hope the stories will improve, some bigger issues than a re-election, don't know exactly how to put it but it's too "small" at the moment, not enough impact. Stories need to impact on a much larger scale.
