Primeval - Season 5

Primeval Season 5

For a Full review + screencaps: Primeval - Series 4 & 5

Release date [UK] July 4, 2011

Release date [US] Januari 10, 2012

Series 5 was being broadcast from May 2011 onwards, 4 months after series 4, in the UK. Nice addition to the cast was of course Philip Burton, whom most of you SF fans know as Dr. Bashir from the TV show : Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Season 5 consists of 6 episodes. In North America the 4th and the 5th season have been released as volume 3 in one package, region free, English subtitles for HOH. Unfortunately there is very little in the special features department, just one featurette. Series 1, 2 & 3 haven't been released on Blu-Ray, so no need to go and search for that!

Primeval on Blu-Ray, although 1080i, looks really amazing, Primeval has never looked better. Series 4 & 5 could just as easily be considered as one season because the story continues from series 4 to 5. It's still a pity that in British series so many cast changes occur because I still miss Cutter, Jenny/Claudia & Stephan Hart, but this new cast does a good job and luckily some characters remain like Connor, Abby and Sir James Lester. Just try it, keep an open mind and have fun!

Extra information regarding the Blu Ray release:

  • Two-disc set (2 BDs)
  • Codec: MPEG-4 AVC
  • Video resolution: 1080i
  • Aspect ratio: 1.78:1
  • English: Dolby Digital 2.0
  • Subtitles : English
  • Region Code : B, A

Special Features:

New Dawn: Making the New Primeval, Part 2 (HD, 16 minutes): "Part 2" focuses on Series Five, the surprises it has in store, the further changes it brings, and the various set pieces, attacks and prehistoric monstrosities it introduces. It's more clip-heavy and exposition-driven than "Part 1," but there's still a lot of good information to be had, from constructing caves to designing believable technology to creating sets and visual effects for the show's fifth outing.

Primeval was cancelled already after it's third season. Mainly due to the crisis which also hit the broadcast company ITV. Luckily it was announced that a deal had been struck between ITV, BBC Worldwide, Watch, Impossible Pictures and the German broadcaster ProSieben to produce two new series of the show for transmission in 2011. Recently it has been announced that will be spin-off called : Primeval : New World. More on the info page of primeval, it's not yet announced if there will be a new season of this Primeval although it ended with a cliff-hanger. In North America the 4th and the 5th season have been released as volume 3 in one package, region free, English subtitles for HOH.

The First 3 series haven't been released on Blu-Ray, only on DVD. There's little chance the first 3 series will be released on blu because series' 1, 2 & 3 haven't been shot in HD. The PQ is more than okay, 1080i resolution, as is common for British Blu-Ray releases, but Primvel never looked better! Series 4 & 5 are glued together story-wise, personally series 4 & 5 are my favorite.

Special Features:

New Dawn: Making the New Primeval, Part 1 (HD, 21 minutes): The first of Volume Three's "New Dawn" documentaries picks up at the end of Series Three and crawls along for three minutes as the cast and crew fill in new viewers on where the characters and story were when the show ended its initial run. Thankfully, it picks up at the three-minute mark, digging into the development of the Primevalrevival, the changes made to the formula, and the new ARC, sets, weapons, heroes, antagonists, creatures, plotlines, anomalies, twists and turns the showrunners dreamed up along the way. "Part 1" is a tad dry, at least early on, but fans will no doubt enjoy going behind-the-scenes to see how Primeval's resurrection was handled.
